I'm just curious I used to go in the FionaHasWings forums (a year ago I think, or was it the new forum, I can't remember!) and there was a thread about her, I downloaded Worn me down, bought the EP... and that's how I became an addict

How funny that Fiona would be your connection, as she basically was mine, too. i saw an article on her in a magazine (Rolling Stone) I think... just a tiny blurb... and it said something like "Instead of waiting around for the new Fiona Apple disc, check this girl out" or something. So I looked her up online... Liked it. Saw her KCRW set online... was hooked

I think, it was June last year. I was listening to the radio "J-wave" and heard her song. Didn't know her name, nor her face, but I was so fascinated and checked the song in the radio site. It turned out to be "Be Be Your Love" and I bought Happenstance. Loved her music Oh, that's how I found her

How I discovered Rachael: I was going to have knee surgery on 3/17 this year, so I moved a TV into my bedroom, you know, so I could watch TV while recovering. Well, I watched "ER" that evening, and at the end of the show, this song came on. I was totally blown away by the voice, so I started writing down the lyrics. I then googled the lyrics and turns out, the song was "I'll find a way" by someone I'd never heard of, Rachael Yamagata. I downloaded that song from iTunes and totally fell in love with the song and her voice. Then I sampled all of the other songs on iTunes, and needless to say, I was hooked. Since then, I've tried to collect, listen to, read about anything Rachael. So thanks to my surgery, I discovered an amazing artist. And that's my Rachael story...

i discovered rachael through ryan adams... i heard cherry lane and i thought, man this female voice is haunting! it's my fave song off the record... and i heard everywhere it's rachael, but now i see, she doesn't appear to be singing it? well, i still think it's her. anyways, i bought happenstance and i just fell for her. i then bought the ep and the live bonnaro show and now i am desperately waiting for the live at the loft!

wow - i first found out about rach when i met her 4 1/2 years ago in early 2001... she was performing in town where i went to college with bumpus (and this was the first time i had ever seen/heard them - the entire band; especially rach; were captivating!!!!)... after their set, the band came back to my friend's place to hang out. rachael and james left early-ish as she wanted to go write. after that, i started to go to a TON of bumpus shows, and got to know her a bit.
by 2002, rach was starting to play more and more solo gigs - of course the members of bumpus would come in as her band. rach and i would see each other at shows, and chat via e-mail. by late 2002 of course, rach was already signed, and bumpus needed a new female vocalist. so, rach enlisted herself as my devoted helper, and helped me audition for james :-) she has been such a great person to have in my ring....

^ That's a great story! ;D
I heard about Rachael back in September 2003 i think... i'm a huge huge fan of a band named Pedestrian (http://www.myspace.com/pedestrianmusic)... they used to open for Damien Rice on his tour back then, along with Rachael in the US... i remember someone telling about Rachael's great performance on the Pedestrian forum and i went on her official website listening to some songs... i liked it. Then i saw her a year later opening for Tom McRae in Paris, i was very excited about it and i was blown away by her performance... the rest is history! ;D

I owe it all to Denise. She wrote about her in her online diary, and then one day on a shopping spree (sp?) I saw the CD and decided to buy it.

I found out about Rachael the same way Denise did (although I thought it was People magazine, but I get both so I might be wrong)...I went to my home office and downloaded her CD off iTunes when I read the article. I listened to the whole thing and instantly loved it, which is rare for me. I look at Rachael's website when I was done and found out that she was playing near my hometown (Portland, Oregon) in 2 days. I went to that show and truly fell in love with her music. The next time she came to Portland, I brought 10 friends to the show and we had the best time. I've been a huge fan ever since that first show!!! Mindy

^ I think they compared her to Fiona in both mags, but I'm not sure That rocks that you brought 10 people to her show! I like to bring people to her shows, too. As well as tell anyone I know in other parts of the world to go see her when she is near them. I think that Rachael may think I am crazy, as so many people have mentioned me to her when they meet her at shows... in the most random places. Japan, London, CA, etc. hehe.

Yeah, I was reading the Rolling Stone and saw her in the tiny blurb on the bottom of a page and found her quite interesting. So, the first day that the cd came out, i went out and bought it and listened to it. I have 4226 songs on my IPOD but her album is pretty much the only album that i can listen all the way through and still be amazed. Well, Hers AND Brian Wilson' SMiLE.

This thread is old, but what the heck...
I found out about Rachael back in 2004. I went to Target to buy a Norah Jones CD when I came across Happenstance. Seeing how her last name was Yamagata, I figured she was a new Jpop (Japanese pop) artist, and since I like Jpop, I thought I might buy her CD instead of Norah Jones. When I played her CD for the first time I was suprised. True, her last name was Yamagata, but she wasn't Jpop at all and she didn't sound Japanese... She was much better! I instantly liked her voice and style of music, and well, the rest is history. I've remained a fan till this day. So, bottom line: I bought her CD just because of her last name... lol.

^ hehe... that is a cute story! Nothing wrong with that, and you were going to buy Norah originally anyway, right? and she is at least in a similar genre. You couldn't lose!

Yeah, and to this day I still haven't bought Norah's CD, lol (which I probably should). But I'm really glad that I chose Rachael's CD because if I had not I would have missed out on someone great.
